Young Leaders' Unit
Young Leaders (YLs) are Explorer Scouts who volunteer with a younger Scouting section (Beavers, Cubs, or Scouts). Some Explorers choose to volunteer as part of completing their Top Awards, others just want the chance to gain some leadership skills and experience!
All YLs are part of the Young Leaders' Unit, which puts on training sessions and events throughout the year. Although the training is optional (except Module A, which you need to do within three months of starting as a YL) it's useful, and will help you become a better leader as you work through it.
How do I become a Young Leader?
If you've already spoken to a Scout Group and they've told you they can take you on as a YL, they will register you with the Young Leaders' Unit who will get in touch with information and an invitation to their next Module A session.
If you want to start as a YL but don't know which Group you'd like to help with, talk to your Unit leaders - they'll be able to put you in touch with the Young Leader team who can help you find a section.
What if I only want to be a Young Leader?
It's possible to be part of Explorers and only a member of the Young Leaders' Unit, although we'd recommend giving one of the main Units a try first! You'll still be able to take part in some of the wider Explorer programme, such as Ten Tors, as well as attending some District Explorer Camps and Events.
